Flintstones animated movie in the works by Adam Mckay and Will Ferrell

The Flintstones
At one time, Fox was hoping to bring the iconic prehistoric cartoon family The Flintstones back to the small screen with "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane behind the project. However, that attempt completely fell apart, and it sounds like a revival of the modern stone age family is dead in the water. But that doesn't mean Fred Flintstone won't be pedaling to the big screen, because THRreports Warner Bros. have set The Campaign and The Other Guys writer Chris Henchy to script a new animated feature film with Adam McKay & Will Ferrell executive producing through their Gary Sanchez Productions banner.

The last time The Flintstones hit the big screen, it was in the form of a live-action film in 1994 starring John Goodman, Elizabeth Perkins, Rosie O'Donnell and Rick Moranis, and it wasn't very good. But maybe an animated film in an updated computer animation style like Mr. Peabody and Sherman or the upcoming Peanuts movie could treat The Flintstones right. Chris Henchy has already taken comedy to a prehistoric time with the box office bomb Land of the Lost. But despite the film's failure at the box office, the Will Ferrell comedy is actually hilarious, and might be one of the more underrated films of the past five years.
Anyway, the project is still in the development stages, so it's not clear how quickly it will come together. The idea will certainly induce a fair share of eye-rolling, but considering the talent behind this new take on The Flintstones, I'm not nearly as opposed to seeing how it turns out as I would be if it were in the hands of someone like the creators of Ice Age or something like that. And considering how well Warner Bros. fared with The LEGO Movie, maybe they can make The Flintstones lovable all over again for kids and families.
