Guardians of the Galaxy's TV Spot James Gunn talks IMAX 3D

While it was no surprise that Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier were quite successful, Guardians of the Galaxy‘s pending success is a bit more up in the air. After all, it’s an untested property based on a somewhat obscure comic book – to the layman, anyway – written and directed by the very quirky James Gunn (Slither, Super).
Still, the trailers so far have been very well-received, not just for Chris Pratt’s funny and commanding presence, but for the offbeat humor, the old school science fiction look, and the interesting concept (it’s The Dirty Dozen meetsStar Wars). Now we’ve got a look at the very first TV spot, which sports some previously unseen footage. Plus, Gunn recently talked about what we can expect from the IMAX 3D release.
The TV spot (above) is, as many spots are, pretty short, but there’s some good footage in there to make up for it. We see Glenn Close as the leader of the Nova Corps (i.e. the Green Lantern Corps of the Marvel Universe), we get a quality one-liner from Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon (“What the hell, I don’t got that long of a lifespan anyway“), and Pratt’s Starlord more or less introduces us to the team (“A thief, two thugs, an assassin, and a maniac“).
And is that our best look yet at Ronan the Accuser as well? Why yes, yes it is
The one bit that I think we could all do without at this point is the joke where Star-Lord says his name (only this time, he says, “We’re the Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Djimon Hounsou says, “Who?” We’ve seen this joke in every trailer. Surely, there are other jokes from the film to showcase.
Meanwhile, director James Gunn recently released a statement on his Facebook page about the IMAX 3D cut of Guardians of the Galaxy. Check it out below:
Just got out of working on the ‘Guardians’ cut for IMAX 3D and I’m unbelievably excited about it. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ has been planned as a 3D film from its very inception. Yes, if you see the film in 2D, you’ll get a full experience. But the 3D experience promises a little something extra. Unlike many directors, I’ve been actively involved with converting every shot to 3D, making sure it works perfectly for the story and the film, making sure it’s spectacular and immersive without being silly, distracting, or overly showy. 3D conversion was once far inferior to shooting in 3D, but over the past couple years new technology has allowed us incredible control over the 3D effects, making it equal to or in some cases greater than shooting in 3D.
As an EXTRA benefit for those who see the film in IMAX 3D, we will be changing aspect ratios throughout the film in a way that makes the experience even fuller and more encompassing. I’ve personally chosen all the places where the changes occur and, again, I love how it’s coming along. The changing aspect ratios in this case are actually a part of the storytelling.
For those interested in seeing Guardians in IMAX 3D – or just plain 3D – it’s surely great to hear that Gunn is dedicating so much time to making it a unique and meaningful experience. Though I’d be interested to hear from some 3D experts regarding his comment that converted 3D is sometimes even better than shooting in 3D. Has this ever been the case in a movie?
